Alvin Chun, Senior Leader
I am the founding pastor of NewSong Church as well as the President of Counterpointe Solutions, Inc., a small business located in the Washington, DC area. My wife, Christine, and I have been married for 20 years and we have six children. I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey and attended Brandeis University. After college, I worked in investment consulting for five years, while simultaneously attending seminary for my Masters of Divinity. After serving at New Covenant Fellowship Church in Maryland, I led a group of seven to plant a church in Northern Virginia in 2001. I serve on the Senior Team that leads NewSong Church. My continuous hope is that my love for the Dallas Cowboys doesn’t discourage people from attending the church; it didn't hinder my wife from marrying me. I believe Love conquers all.
Michelle Lawrence, Children's Director
At NewSong my primary role is to lead the Kingdom Heroes Children's Ministry. I have been involved in different forms of children's ministry for 15+ years and have a heart to see children step into their destiny in God at a young age. In 2006 I spent time in Kansas City as an intern at IHOP (International House of Prayer). I also attended the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry at Bethel Church in Redding, CA, prior to being sent out to DC as an intercessory missionary. I joined the team in 2008 and have seen our children activated in encountering God and living their everyday life connected to Him. One of our missions is to emphasize to children their identity as God’s kids who were created to be Kingdom Heroes. My teaching style can be described as interactive and empowering.
I believe that when we dream with God, anything is possible!
Fun Facts: I love morning “quiet time”, strong coffee, and anything water related (swimming in the ocean, dancing in the rain, drinking triple reverse osmosis purified water etc.)
What is one of your favorite quotes?
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” -C.S. Lewis
If you could be any fictional character, whom would you choose?
I love the little girl named Lucy from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe from the Chronicles of Narnia series. Lucy is the one who can see Aslan, even when the other can’t. She believes in Him, trusts Him, and always looks for Him—not just when she needs Him, but when she wants to be with Him. I love her childlike faith and the way she so confidently and comfortably approaches Aslan, whereas the others are more hesitant and a little bit distant. She knows that she is loved and welcomed. I feel like this is my heart and my approach to God. I want to seek Him and find Him and approach Him with confidence, knowing that He has given me access and wants me close.
What’s something that’s quirky about you?
Haha, one thing? In general, I feel like I can go from one extreme to another. Sometimes I want lots of lights on; sometimes I just want candles lit. Sometimes I love listening to music, other times I prefer total silence. Sometimes I fast from caffeine; other times I drink 4-6 cups of coffee a day. I enjoy working out in the spring and fall; I dislike working out in the summer and winter. I love to laugh really hard, and I also love a good ugly cry. Sometimes I love to wear all black and keep things simple; other times I love to be bold and bright with my makeup and clothes. And sometimes, I switch from one extreme to the other in a simple moment. All in all, I love to live life to the fullest, be present in every moment, and enjoy the grand, the simple, and everything in between in life :)
What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
ONE of the hardest things I have ever done was train for a ½ marathon… but it was also one of the most rewarding and amazing experiences of my life as well. Not only was race day full of joy and excitement, but also the process of training and pushing myself past what I ever thought would be possible was actually a really healing and freeing journey for me. I had never run more than a mile in my life before starting to run with friends. I thought that only the super competitive and crazy active people could do something like that. I learned that I was a lot stronger and had more endurance in me than I realized. I also experienced how the community, camaraderie and encouragement can empower you to reach beyond what you could conquer on your own.
Chris Pautrat, Youth Pastor
My lifelong dream is to see the youth transformed by the love of the Father into mighty warriors who become vessels of transformation that change families, communities, and culture. I have a passion for worship and for releasing the prophetic voices and sounds that call forth a harvest in this generation. I dream of 10,000 youth being released from the Washington D.C. area into the nations. My wife Bethany and I are proud parents to four beautiful children. Together, we also serve as directors for the Mid-Atlantic region for the Burn 24-7, a powerful prayer and worship movement.
Who Inspires You?
Martin Luther King Jr’s revelation from his personal relationship with God, his methods of confronting injustice, his dealing with people for and against him, and the way he inspired generations with his prophetic “I Have a Dream” speech, inspires me.
Who is your Hero?
Smith Wigglesworth is another hero for the testimonies of activating wild miracles and his radical faith.
What is your favorite food?
I love NewSong family dinner and I am honored to be a part of such incredible families. I am unmoved in my stance that Peruvian is the best food in the world.
